With a slightly shorter commute the senior team was hosted by Vitesse Delft some 45 minutes bus journey from Noordvijk. From departure it was clear the team was well up for this fixture and they did not disappoint. Mike the lad's coach for the week kept us company on our journey and inspired the team pre-match. This match was always going to require a big performance to get the campaign off to a good start and the lads certainly didn't disappoint from the first kick. Webster's quickly established a stranglehold on the game and never let this go.
Oozing confidence and demonstrating dazzling skill and total football the lads quickly opened their account through Stuart Reid who scored a predatory goal capitalising on a very good parried save by their keeper. This was followed by 3 very quick scores and yet more flamboyant play. Smart and Al-Ansari provided pace and made life extremely difficult and caused numerous problems with slick play and good support through their wide positions. MacDonald and Day were like the great wall of China in defence and provided an option for attack from depth and the maintenance of possession rather than cover at the back.
At full back positions Farquharson and Brough made excellent overlapping runs with the midfield and regularly got forward and made a menace of themselves. Up front Reid and Cameron were uncontrollable for the hosts. In the middle Watson and Ferguson commanded their troops and controlled the game from start to finish. Dobbie prowled his box and barked orders but only saw the ball once and it was more a case of staying warm.
Thomson, Tinker and Basford injected pace and fresh legs after 15 minutes and outstanding link up play by Thomson and hard graft was evident from his introduction. Basford and Tinker stepped in at centre back positions and continued on as MacDonald and Day had done previously. Basford played with much improved confidence and this meant he was heavily involved in build up play. Tinker sprayed pinpoint accurate passes and took a well deserved goal. At half time the score was 7 - 0.
The second half continued much as the first had and Dobbie came outfield to right back and MacDonald took over as keeper. Webster's ran out final winners 11 - 0 with goals from: Day x 5, Tinker x 1, Ferguson x 1, Reid x 2, Thomson x 1 and Watson x 1. Such a strong performance meant techniques and skills learned in training could be put into action in the game situation. Furthermore, players positions could also be rotated and explored to provide strength and depth for future games. Mike who is the lads coach travelled along and was very impressed by the standard of play.
After match discussion meant a very tough choice for the man of the match award. However, with a captains performance and strong leadership Watson was awarded M.O.M. Most improved player was Basford. Big thanks to Mum and Dad for the new boots! An outstanding result, here's hoping for tomorrow night's game and the tournament on Thursday.
